ABOUT
Tracy McMullen is a saxophonist, composer, and Associate Professor of Music at Bowdoin College. Her 2019 book, Haunthenticity: Musical Replay and the Fear of the Real, examines musical performance and its relationship to conceptions of the past, history, and identity. She is currently researching her second book, The Courage Hear: Jazz Traditions and the Price of the Ticket, which investigates jazz as a moral practice. Her articles and chapters have appeared in numerous peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes in the United States and Europe. She has held fellowship positions with USC, IICSI (Canada), and the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice and has served on national and international grant and prize committees for the NEA, the AMS, and FWF. El Malo is a musical collective specializing in the sounds of Latin dance music blended with jazz, hiphop, funk, soul, and progressive rock influences. With fresh sounding tributes to classic Latin artists and energetic original material courtesy of a lineup featuring drum kit/Latin percussion, electric guitar, bass, vocals and horns, we bring the party to any event.
On El Malo's first (self titled) release, a low-fi Latin Jazz session recorded live in Brunswick, Maine; the Portland Phoenix published a complementary review, calling the release, in part: "gritty and nasty in some interesting ways" and "As a whole, this album is a piece of genuinely different music-making with Latin and gypsy flavors you won't find often in Portland."
